Armed with little more than determination and a cheap dynamo, William set out to build a makeshift wind turbine. Through trial and error, he honed his craft, eventually crafting a functioning turbine that powered his father’s radio.
Word of William’s extraordinary invention spread like wildfire, attracting the attention of local farmers and journalists alike. Suddenly, this humble teenager from Malawi found himself thrust into the international spotlight. His story captivated the world, sparking a wave of admiration and curiosity.
In August 2009, William had the opportunity to showcase his innovation at Maker Faire Africa in Ghana, an event celebrating grassroots ingenuity. Surrounded by fellow inventors and enthusiasts, he shared his journey – from humble beginnings to global acclaim.
Recognition continued to pour in for William, culminating in the prestigious 2010 GO Ingenuity Award. Presented by the Santa Monica-based nonprofit GO Campaign, the award recognized William’s pioneering spirit and his commitment to empowering marginalized youth in developing nations.
With the grant from the GO Campaign, William returned to his home village, eager to pay it forward. He organized workshops, teaching young people how to build wind turbines and repair water pumps.
