Despite financial obstacles, his mother’s selfless sacrifice ensured his education, leading him to become the 13th ranked chess player in Nigeria.
Onakoya’s academic achievements include a diploma in computer science from Yaba College of Technology, where he excelled as a gold medalist in various chess competitions. His accolades extend to winning prestigious tournaments like the National Friends of Chess and the Chevron Chess Open.
Featured on CNN African Voices, Onakoya’s dedication to promoting chess as a tool for empowerment has earned him recognition both locally and internationally. As a board member of The Gift of Chess, a non-profit organization based in New York City, he continues to champion the game’s benefits for youth development.
Chess in Slums Africa, founded in September 2018, has since impacted the lives of over 200 children, providing them with essential skills and lifelong opportunities. Partnering with Chess.com in 2020 further expanded their reach, offering educational resources to classrooms, chess clubs, and families.
Notable achievements include Ferdinand, a 10-year-old boy with cerebral palsy, winning a chess tournament in Makoko in May 2021. Ferdinand’s success symbolizes the inclusivity and empowerment fostered by Chess in Slums Africa. Tunde’s determination reached new heights with his attempt to break the global record for the longest chess marathon in New York City’s Times Square. “We’re pushing to 60 hours, guys. We’re not stopping yet. Let’s keep going.
“We have a fundraising goal to meet for the education of African children around the world. This is our why – the reason we are doing this.
“Let’s demonstrate to the world the incredible power of love. Together, we can make this happen.”
